The decorative porcelain disc appears to float freely on its solid wooden base. A design object that provides a fitting backdrop for the famous Hokusai painting depicted. Whether with or without a floral arrangement, it's a stunning eye-catcher for a stylish home. Vase - The Wave, with real gold decoration. Limited Edition: 999 pieces with certificate. Katsushika Hokusai, born in 1760 in what is now Tokyo, began an apprenticeship as a woodcarver at the age of 15. He traveled throughout Japan, frequently changing his teachers, schools, and even his name. In his nearly ninety years of life, Hokusai used around 30 names, including Gakyojin, which can be translated as "mad about painting." Hokusai became particularly famous for his series of paintings, "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji." His most famous painting, "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," is part of this series. The Japanese considered Hokusai's works to be more of a "functional art," while in Europe his work contributed to Japonism, inspired artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Egon Schiele, and Gustav Klimt, and influenced Art Nouveau.
